York St. John Graduation

I know...graduation in November?  Apparently it takes this long after school is finished in June for all papers to be read and graded to determine whether a student can graduate or not.  Since YSJ has so many international students, this can't be very convenient. However, most of the students listed in the program attended the graduation ceremonies. (I just attended graduation for the Business School.  There are two more separate ceremonies this week.)  I was expecting a lot of "pomp and circumstance" but the ceremony wasn't all that different from Hope's.....except it took place in a 13th century Minster instead of an outdoor stadium!

The CEO of Marks and Spencer (the large department store) received an honorary degree and gave a brief talk.  Named by a London newspaper as one of the most influential business people in Britain, he is Dutch and has been living in England (Yorkshire, actually) since 2006.  His advice to students: "Stay close to your values, but don't take the straight and easy path. Be led by your curiosity and expose yourself to difficult circumstances. Life is not a 3-course meal - always look forward to the next course."

This is one of my office-mates all decked out for the ceremony - again, quite similar to academic regalia at home.
