Thursday

Since my first meeting at school was mid-afternoon, we took a leisurely walk along the wall to get there.  We can do about half the distance from our apartment to the University by walking the wall!

Our walk to school along the wall, which turns into a bridge over the River Ouse at one point.
Below, just another old building we passed on our walk...

Met with the Hope students to get our schedules set for classes and our trips to London and Edinburgh, and then we went to a reception the school had for international students.
My students: Brian, Laurenn and Ray

We were able to visit one of the historic churches our tour guide recommended to us, the Church of Holy Trinity, parts of which date from the 12th century.  Of particular interest are the box pews, a rare 17th century survivor: pews such as this were once common in Anglican churches, but most were removed in the 19th century.

The Churches Conservation Trust (the charity that protects historic churches at risk) lists this as an "exceptional Grade 1 Listed building." The Trust is selling Christmas cards as a fund raiser, so I think those will be my Christmas cards this year!
