Hope's Yorkshire Management Semester

A little bit of information about the program I'm heading up this semester:  Hope College is trying a new way to help students take part in an overseas study program while still obtaining upper level course credit in our Management major.  We are partnering with York St. John University in York, England.  Students will take one-two courses from me (Marketing Management and our Management Seminar for seniors) and one-two courses at York St. John.  Students are staying in YSJ dorms and will participate in all activities YSJ plans for international students.  I will be living in an off-campus apartment and have an office in the building with YSJ business school faculty.  In addition to the coursework, I will be taking Hope students on weekend trips to London and Edinburgh.  I went to London, York and Edinburgh in May to get things set up.  Here are some of my pictures of York:

York is an amazing old walled town (above is Mickelgate Bar - one of three main gates into the city) of about 150,000 population.  Most of the wall enclosing the city still exists and the 3-mile walk on it around the inner city is a popular pastime.   York St. John is just outside the wall.

Above is the main entrance to YSJ campus and the view toward the wall when I turned around.

York is situated on the River Ouse (pronounced ooze), which runs through the city center - much of which is car-free.

One reason cars are restricted in the city centre is that it is filled with "snickleways" - narrow pedestrian streets that lead to old market squares.

But perhaps York is best known for the York Minster - the Gothic cathedral which is one of the largest of its kind in Europe.  But don't call it a cathedral - apparently locals make fun of tourists who call it a cathedral instead of a "minster" (and those who pronounce the street Gillygate wrong - correct pronunciation is Jillygate).

Much more to come about the city and the school once we arrive.
